NEST MONITORING

Volunteers locate and monitor Bay Area raptor nests as early as December and as late as August.  (In the San Francisco region, Great Horned Owls may be incubating eggs by mid-December.)  Nest monitors make only occasional nest visits to confirm occupancy, hatching date, and number of young fledged. Most of our nest monitoring has been focused on San Francisco, Berkeley, and Sonoma County.  These nesting studies complement our migration counts to help us better assess annual raptor population trends and changes.  We also have assisted PG&E, city planners and park foresters when development or tree trimming is proposed near a known territory.
