BANDING PROGRAM

Specially trained volunteer banders trap, band, measure, and release hawks to continue their journey, each within about 20 minutes.  Banded hawks subsequently encountered by humans are (hopefully) reported to the US Bird Banding Laboratory by the finder, and we receive a report of where the bird was found and what the circumstances were.  Banding recoveries help us answer questions about what raptor populations we are tracking in our count studies – what are their geographical ranges?  Recoveries also give us insight into causes of  raptor injuries and deaths.  Banding hawks gives us a rare opportunity to study them in hand, to check its physical health, weight and condition.
